Get started

The current app requires macOS 14 or later. Visit the download page for the available installer and version details.

Allow Accessibility so Tidest can control windows. Screen Recording is optional and used for previews. Choose “Not now” to use app icons and window titles instead.

Switch to the right window

By default, hold Option and press Tab to open window previews. Press Tab again to select the next window, then release Option to switch. The first selection is the frontmost window on your current desktop. Multiple windows from the same app appear separately.

Click a preview to switch directly. Press Esc or click outside to cancel. Minimized windows are restored first. In horizontal previews, swipe left or right or use the mouse wheel to choose.

In the Windows tab of the menu bar Settings, choose horizontal or tiled previews and customize the switching shortcut. Tiled previews can be scrolled vertically.

Quick Layout

Point at a visible part of the window and press Option + Q by default. Partially covered windows can be selected too. The panel stays open when you release Option. Click a position or press 1–9 to apply it. Press Esc or click outside to cancel.

1 top left, 2 top half, 3 top right; 4 left half, 5 fill screen, 6 right half; 7 bottom left, 8 bottom half, 9 bottom right. Option + Q is the default shortcut. Change it or restore the default in the Windows tab of the menu bar Settings.

The layout uses the available area of the display under your pointer, leaving room for the menu bar and system Dock. Fill screen does not enter a separate macOS full-screen desktop. App window size limits may affect the result.

Pick up and dock a window

Press Option + W once to start picking up a window. You can release the keys and continue choosing. Click a highlighted window to pick up its preview, move to the Window Dock, then click to put it down. The original window stays in place. Press Esc or the shortcut again to cancel.

Move to the screen edge to reveal the Window Dock; it hides when you leave. Click an item to switch to its window. Move the dock to either edge, drag items to reorder, or drag one out and release to remove it without closing its window.

Window Dock is enabled by default. Turn it off or customize the Pick Up Window shortcut in Settings.

Close it. Reopen its saved path.

After docking a window, enable Keep with the pin on its item. Finder remembers the current folder or Recents location. After the window closes, the item is marked Closed; click it to create a window at the last successfully saved location. Items without Keep are removed when their original window closes.

macOS Terminal keeps the local directory of its selected tab. Chrome and Safari keep the window’s tab URLs, their order, and the selected tab. Other apps only reopen the app. Terminal commands, SSH sessions, and actions within web pages are not restored.

The list, order, and previews are stored locally and restored when Tidest restarts. Kept locations update as you use the windows. macOS may ask for Automation permission to read Finder, Terminal, or browsers. Denying permission only affects that attempt to save or reopen.

Understand permissions

Accessibility is required to switch windows, identify the window under your pointer, and move or resize it. Screen Recording is optional and only used for screenshots.

Check permission status in the General tab of Tidest Settings and use Open System Settings to manage it. Reopening windows in supported apps may also require Automation permission.
